Memorial Service at St Peter’s Eastern Hill
: 11am
~ Anniversary of the death of Charles Joseph La Trobe on 4 December 1875 ~
La Trobe was remembered at this service, coinciding with a memorial service at St Michael the Archangel, Litlington, Sussex, where he is buried. The Vicar of St Peter’s, Rev Dr Hugh Kempster, invited La Trobe Society members and their friends to the service, followed by refreshments. Address: 15 Gisborne Street, Melbourne.

175th Anniversary of La Trobe’s Arrival in Melbourne
: 6.30 - 8.30pm
Eddie Butler-Bowden, Program Manager, Art and Heritage Collection, City of Melbourne spoke about ‘Portraits in the Collection of the City of Melbourne’ and led a viewing of the 1855 portrait of Charles Joseph La Trobe by Sir Francis Grant that hangs in the Lord Mayor’s room. The Volunteer Garden Coordinator, Sandi Pullman, was in attendance to talk about La Trobe’s plants and to answer questions about historic plants.

History Week at La Trobe’s Cottage:
Cottage open 2 – 4pm
Tours focused on Charles Joseph La Trobe as the pioneering administrator in Victoria’s foundation and also provided an insight into family life at his ‘Jolimont’ estate. Click here to visit the History Week website

Seniors Week at La Trobe’s Cottage:
Cottage open 2 – 4pm
Visitors were able to discover how Charles Joseph La Trobe, Victoria’s first Governor, and his family lived in early Melbourne. They were also able to enjoy the simple yet elegant family home with many pieces of original furniture and the garden containing many plants of the 1840s-50s

Spring Opening at La Trobe’s Cottage: 2 – 4pm

A special spring opening of La Trobe’s Cottage, celebrating the 175th anniversary of the arrival of Charles Joseph La Trobe, Victoria’s first Governor, and his family in early Melbourne. Visitors were able to see how the 1840s-50s garden was developing and enjoy the glories of spring.

Official flag raising ceremony, followed by live entertainment and a rifle volley & cannon fire by the Historical Re-enactment Society of Australia. La Trobe’s Other Library: Charles La Trobe, Redmond Barry and the Library of the Supreme Court of Victoria

An illustrated lecture highlighting the cultural foundations on which Victoria is built, with a focus on the establishment and development of the Supreme Court. Friends of La Trobe’s Cottage Annual Lecture

‘Mrs Walas is “ded and beried”: birth and other perils for women in mid-nineteenth century Victoria’ was the topic of Dr Madonna Grehan, Director, Australian Nursing and Midwifery History Project, University of Melbourne, and La Trobe Society Fellow for 2013. Visitors were able to learn how Charles Joseph La Trobe, Victoria's first Governor, and his family lived in early Melbourne. La Trobe’s Birthday Celebration:
4 – 6pm
Guest speakers were Professor Emeritus John Barnes and Loreen Chambers, and their topic was ‘Prologue and Epilogue’ – the early and later life of Charles Joseph La Trobe. Their presentation was followed by a ceremonial cutting of a birthday cake and champagne in celebration of La Trobe’s 213th birthday. Venue: Domain House (next door to La Trobe’s Cottage).

Australia Day at La Trobe’s Cottage:
Cottage open 1 – 4pm
Visitors  joined in the celebration of Australia Day in the Domain with guided tours of the Cottage, flag raising ceremonies and rifle salutes. It was Open Day at nearby Government House so they were able to visit the homes of both the first and current Victorian Governors.
